Jungle Day Camp-Indiana Jones Obstacle Course-

In past years, the obstacle course class has gotten poor reviews from the cubs.  They get tired of doing the same old thing each time.  I was determined to make it more exciting this year!  Since we had a jungle theme at camp, I chose to loosely base my obstacle course on some of the Indiana Jones adventures.

We had 8 obstacles for our young Indies to get through, each something they'd never done at camp before.  As they completed each obstacle, the group would receive one clue to a puzzle.  It was impossible for them to solve the puzzle without all 8 clues put in the right order.   The proper order of the clues (to make it readable) was on the base of a golden statue retrieved in the last obstacle.

Dode and I created all the events and brought them out to camp.  The station leaders had to figure out how to lay out the course and run the boys through it.  They did a great job!

I love this photo!  The cub scout picking up the idol broke his ankle the day before camp started but was determined to be there.  He came late the first morning because he had been getting his cast on that morning.  This was the last challenge.  It was where they would receive the final clue to the location of the "treasure".  The treasure was a bin full of donated toys hidden somewhere at camp.

They started by walking on a balance beam while avoiding "The Crank".  Next up were pool noodle loops.  They had to go over some and under others.

Remember all the trouble Indiana Jones had with snakes?  They had to get through the "snakes", making sure the black ones didn't touch them.

They had to feed the hungry tiger by using a sling shot to shoot a ping pong ball through its mouth.

Next up was the "Wheel of Fate".  The wheel had several animals listed on it. They had to spin the wheel to find out which animal they got and had to walk the length of rope while walking like that animal.

After that it was time to walk across the rope bridge.

My favorite tag-a-long.

The next to the last obstacle was the dangerous passage.  I got the idea for this from the hallway Indiana Jones has to make it down in the first movie.  Here's how we made it.

As the grand finale for our Indiana Jones Obstacle Course, they had to retrieve the golden idol.  Here's how we made it.

I had a few scouts who were pretty disappointed to arrive at camp Wednesday morning to see that the Indiana Jones course was gone.  They were hoping to play with the events again.  I think I can adapt a lot of it for next years' space theme.  Usually when I ask a boy what his favorite class is at camp, he says, "BB guns."  I say, "What else?"  In past years, it's been "Archery".  This year it was, "Indiana Jones!"  A pretty good comeback for a class that wasn't very popular.
