Dorrel's new job

In August, Dorrel changed jobs after working 12 years at the same company.  He now works in the GIS department of the Tulalip Tribes.  Here is the new administrative building where he works.  He has a view of Tulalip Bay out the window from his work station.  He actually worked on this building before he ever worked in it because his former employer did the surveying on the site.  One of his coldest ugliest days at his old job was spent out here with steady rain and wind from off the Puget Sound.  Now he can enjoy the fruits of his labor!

In the GIS department, he uses his training as a land surveyor to create dynamic maps.  The things he does now have lots of strange acronyms, but as I understand it, he's making maps that allow users to click on different icons within the map to get more information about a location.  Governments use GIS maps to track their infrastructure.  His current focus is locating the original section corners that were put in back in the late 1800's.  We visited him on National GIS Day. He doesn't usually wear a t-shirt to work, the orange t-shirt was a special GIS Day shirt.

We got to see his work station.  We also had a snack in the lunch room which has a fabulous floor to ceiling view of Tulalip Bay.  The girls loved the all-you-can-drink whipped hot chocolate and the generous 25 cent candy machine.
Here are some posters he worked on for display at GIS day.  In order to see the entire thing, you need to click on the map.

  1. What a cool job and a beautiful location! I took a close look at the first map. It looks so cool, but there are a lot of problems to work out. Fun!

  2. Wow, and to think that I made it this for in life without even knowing there was a national GSI Day. Happy GSI Day, Dode! Now what is GSI again?

  4. Your parents think you are amazing in your work! Dad sure understands a lot more than your Mom. I understand enough to appreciate all the schooling you have done and your talents in this field.
